Our Veterinarians

Dr. Jeanette Lubenau

In Loving Memory of Dr. Jeanette Lubenau 1970-2014: Welcome to our clinic! I am the founding veterinarian of Above & Beyond Pet Care Hospital. We opened our doors January 13, 2004 and we happily moved to our current location and added on the Pet Resort in the summer of 2010.

I was born and raised in Alamogordo, NM. When I was a child, I saw a dog get seriously injured. I felt so helpless and didn't know how to help, so in the first grade, I decided I would be a veterinarian. Growing up, I was a proud 1st chair member of the Alamogordo Tiger Band Drum Line in high school, a lifeguard, and a girl scout camp horse "wrangler".

With a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck, I entered the veterinary world. I put in my hours as a kennel worker and I attended NMSU for my undergraduate degree (Go Aggies!!). After four more years of hard studying, I graduated from Colorado State University Veterinary School in 1994. I originally wanted to be a SeaWorld vet, but after learning how much research is involved with a position like that, I came to Texas thinking I could pursue my career with horses. Ahhh, best laid plans: I ended up in Lubbock working in small animal medicine and wildlife and haven't regretted a moment of it. Animals are the most important thing to me: I want the best for my own pets and in turn, I want the best for all pets.

I love what I do. In particular, I love surgery (neuters make my day), and surgery lead me to canine rehabilitation. I completed my rehabilitation training and earned my CCRP at the University of Tennessee in 2009. I have found that rehabilitation takes a bit more patience than the rest of practice, but that it is often so very rewarding. I also enjoy internal medicine and have also found that oncology & chemotherapy interest me. Of course, who doesn't love the cute puppies and kittens that come in!

Another veterinarian introduced me to my husband Lonny. Lonny keeps himself very busy in the cattle business. He is an avid gardener and he enjoys barbequing: with his help, Above & Beyond earned first place Brisket in the 2012 Chamber of Commerce Hub City BBQ Competition.

We have three children- Colton, Allie, and KK, ages nine, six, and five. Our free time is taken up with Karate lessons, music & gymnastic classes, and lots and lots and lots of swimming. We have 2 dogs - Duchess who loves to show off all her commands (she’s a smart pup!) and Olivia, my Great Dane. I love to horseback ride, scuba dive, camp, fish, play racquetball, and go skiing. I am new to yoga and have been surprised to find that I really enjoy it. My family also loves to travel: recently we have been to Disney and to the Florida Keys. And I can't forget the music: give me a pair of drum sticks and I'll show you what I can do!

Ronnie DeForrest, DVM

I was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. I attended Lubbock High School and then Texas Tech University. I received my MBA in Healthcare Management in 2000, and my DVM from Louisiana State University in 2015. I am very excited about the opportunities offered at Above and Beyond. I officially joined the team in September 2015.

I have always had a passion for animals. After 10 years in administration in human medicine, my wife and I made the decision for me to go back to school and pursue my true passion, treating animals. I joined Above and Beyond to be a part of a top notch veterinary hospital and return to my hometown.

I enjoy seeing dogs and particularly cats. My areas of interest are surgery, dermatology, and preventative medicine. I have a wife, Angie, and several furry kids of the dog and cat variety. Angie and I enjoy traveling and volunteering/supporting animal rescue. Outside work, I enjoy playing and watching sports, working with animal rescue organizations (we have fostered six dogs), and spending time with my wife and pets.

Whitney Ledford, DVM

I was born and raised in Lubbock, TX. My love for animals started early as I had an inseparable bond with my family’s miniature schnauzer, Rowdy. It was in the first grade that I told my parents there was no better feeling in the world than saving a dog’s life. I attended Lubbock Christian School from pre-kindergarten through my senior year of high school. While there I participated in all sorts of sports, academic competitions, and band. Upon graduating high school in 2008, I attended Lubbock Christian University. It was then that I began working in a vet clinic as a veterinary assistant, and my love for this field began to blossom. I graduated from LCU in 2012 with a Bachelor’s in Animal Science. I was accepted into veterinary school at Texas A&M and received my DVM in 2016.

I joined the team at Above & Beyond in June 2016. The progressive nature and high standard of care is what drove me to join this clinic. I love the time I get to spend developing relationships with clients and their pets. I am especially interested in surgery but also enjoy preventative medicine, dermatology, and ophthalmology.

I met my husband, Jeffrey, while in vet school. We got married in July of 2014. He is currently a mixed animal veterinarian at Spur Veterinary Hospital. We have two border collie mixes, Grace and Hattie, as well as a quarter horse. Outside of work, I love to participate in and watch sports. I am an avid runner and love competing in road races. Jeffrey and I have developed a passion for going on mission trips and helping those in need. Most recently we went on a veterinary mission trip to Honduras. In our spare time we enjoy spending as much time as possible with our family and friends. We are thrilled to be back in Lubbock and thankful for the opportunity to serve the community we love.

Shanna Hardin-LaCount, DVM

I am originally from, and still reside in, Lovington, NM. I have been with Above and Beyond for a couple years doing relief work, but joined the team full time in April 2015. I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science from New Mexico State University in May 2007, and graduated with my DVM from Colorado State University in May 2011. From there, I completed a year-long internship at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery in Weatherford, TX. Currently, in addition to working at Above and Beyond, I own my own large animal mobile practice, HD Veterinary Services, based in Lovington.

At Above and Beyond, I enjoy seeing patients as well as doing some surgery. I have some experience with acupuncture, and would like to see this implemented more in our hospital. I have been married to my husband Zach for 4 years, and we have several animals; three dogs, Bailey the Basset Hound, Tate the Aussie, and Dually the one eyed Corgi. Our horses are Mr. Thirsty (still going strong at 26 years old), Pudge the bad boy, Newt the husband’s trouble maker, and Handsome Rob the baby. You may also know my sister, Dr. Jenna Hillman, who is the chiropractor that works at our hospital on Thursdays.

In my spare time, when I have it, I enjoy being outdoors and prefer to be on the back of a horse. I also enjoy skiing and all the fun things I used to do in Colorado.
