Our Veterinarians

Dr. Derek Ishida, Managing Veterinarian

Dr. Ishida was born and raised in Mililani, Hawaii, and has since called three different states “home” since leaving to pursue his undergraduate degree. In 2004, he graduated with his BA in Biology from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. On the cusp of graduation, Dr. Ishida discovered a passion working with animals, and channeled his interests by first volunteering at the local humane society, becoming an active foster parent, and then a full-time animal technician at Heartland Humane Society. Meanwhile he worked with an equine therapeutic riding program (Equitopia) assisting disabled and autistic children, and began post baccalaureate studies in Animal Sciences at Oregon State University with the goal of pursuing a degree in Veterinary Medicine.

When it came time to attend veterinary school, Dr. Ishida and his wife, Dr. Miranda Scolari, moved to Southern California – he graduated in 2011 with his DVM from Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona California. Following graduation Dr. Ishida moved to Hamilton, NJ where he worked as an Associate Veterinarian and then Chief of Staff of a small animal practice, as his wife pursued post-doctoral research at the Princeton University Neuroscience Institute. They left New Jersey for Lubbock in 2016 after Miranda accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychological Sciences at Texas Tech University – moving with their twin boys Anders and Oliver, and two cats Jazzy and Mazy. While new transplants to West Texas, the family has quickly found a beautiful and welcoming community to call home.

Dr. Ishida is a passionate practitioner and was drawn to work at Above and Beyond Pet Care Hospital because of the high quality medical standards at Lubbock’s only AAHA accredited veterinary practice, and the passionate care demonstrated by his coworkers. He has a special interest in working up interesting medical cases with a passion for Canine and Feline internal medicine, dermatology and dentistry.
